The old stairs were done. Cracked, weathered, and soft in spots - the kind of steps you stop trusting without even realizing it. A lot of contractors would have quoted a full tear-down and rebuild. We stripped the decking back first to see what we were actually working with.

Here's what we found - the underlying framing was still structurally sound. Good bones. So we kept what made sense, reinforced the substructure with additional support where we wanted to see it, and moved forward from there. No reason to rip out solid work just to run up the bill.

From there, it was all fresh cedar - new decking on the landing platform and new risers on every step. Cedar is a great choice for exterior stairs. It holds up well to moisture and foot traffic, and it looks sharp right out of the gate. The fit and finish on a project like this matters too, because sloppy cuts show up fast on a staircase.

What you end up with is a set of steps that's safe, tight, and clean-looking. No flex, no soft spots, no sketchy edges. Just solid exterior work done the right way. This is the kind of handyman and exterior carpentry job we do regularly - whether it's stairs, decking, or other structural fixes around the outside of your home.
