A lot of homeowners look at a worn-out pergola and assume the only option is to tear it down and start over. That's not always the case. If the posts and main frame are still structurally sound, you can save a significant amount of money by replacing just what's failing - in this case, the slats.

Here's what we were working with: a large attached pergola with heavily weathered, darkened slats that had seen better days. The frame itself was solid. The bones were good. So rather than demo the whole thing, we stripped off every old slat and got a clear look at what we had to work with before moving forward.

We replaced the full run of roof slats with fresh lumber, keeping consistent spacing across the entire span. While we were at it, we reinforced the frame to make sure everything was tight and ready to hold up long-term. That kind of work - the stuff you don't necessarily see - is what determines how long a structure like this actually lasts.

The finished pergola sits cleanly over the patio, gives the backyard real shade coverage, and looks like it belongs there. No sagging. No gaps where old wood rotted out. Just a clean, refreshed structure that's ready for years of use. That's the value of knowing when to repair versus when to replace - and doing the repair the right way.
